Sathya Sai School of Canada

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The newly-built permanent premises of the Sathya Sai School of Canada was inaugurated on 20th May 2016 by Dr. Narendranath Reddy, Chairman, Prasanthi Council, in Toronto, Ontario, in time for classes in the upcoming academic year in September 2016.
The modern, 30,000 square feet building, located on 2.5 acres, incorporates the latest state of the art technologies and environmental awareness. The inaugural ceremony was attended by senior officers of the SSIO, director of the ISSE of Canada, school principal and trustees of the education trust, officers and members of SSIO Canada, staff members, parents, volunteers and supporters of the school as well as the resplendent school children.
Established in September 2000 by the divine command of Sathya Sai Baba as a non-profit, private school for all children, the school offers the Ministry of Ontario Curriculum integrated with spiritual education based on human values.

Baba said, “School is My project … make this project happen. Start small. Grow slowly.”

Within 6 years of its establishment, Grade 3 and Grade 6 students of the school scored a perfect 10 in province-wide examinations, elevating the school to the prestigious, hand-picked group of No. 1 schools in the Canadian Province of Ontario, a success it has replicated year-after-year since then. In fact, for the past 16 years, the school has been a model school for human values education, while maintaining high standards of academic success.
Students working on a digital art project
From its humble beginning with 60 students in three classes, namely Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1, the school now has 200 students enrolled in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8. It balances both secular education and character development with demonstrated excellence.
Science Fair participants
This is largely due to the dedication and hard work of accredited and dedicated teachers who have been trained in Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) and a committed principal, staff, Parent Council and Sri Sathya Sai Education Trust of Canada, who have created an atmosphere of love that permeates and sustains the school.
Students learning about Christianity
Not only have the children won awards and accolades for their outstanding behaviour and excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities, they have created awareness in the local community of the importance of values and character education.
Students increasing awareness about human values in the community
At the community level, school children, educators, staff and parents have addressed public assemblies on the importance of human values and selfless service. They regularly participate in community service programmes, distribute food and warm clothing to the under-privileged, and sponsor many service projects, for example, supplying water to the indigent residents of Uganda.
Sudents pack food for the needy
The Sathya Sai School of Canada illuminates the role of character development in schools and has become a beacon of light not only for Canada, but the entire world.
Graduation ceremony
The SSIO extends its warm congratulations and gratitude to the school, its students, staff, parents, patrons and all those who are dedicated to its continuing success.

Please feel free to forward this bulletin to family, friends, and others.

With loving regards,
Dr. Anupom Ganguli,

RELIEF FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN ITALY

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On 24th August 2016, Italy was affected by a series of major earthquakes, followed by aftershocks.

The original 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck a cluster of mountain communities about 140 km east of Rome bringing down whole villages and causing multiple deaths and injuries. This was followed by other earthquakes, including one that registered 6.6 on the Richter Scale. Many people lost family members and some young children lost both parents. A further series of earthquakes at the end of October shook several towns near Rome and caused widespread damage, leading to the evacuation of more than 25,000 people from their homes.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquakes, the Civil Defence Unitalsi (“CDU”) of the Italian government mobilised relief efforts, and requested the SSIO of Italy to assist with housing, heating and basic household necessities for these families.
The SSIO placed an immediate order for a pre-fabricated housing unit for a family of 10 rendered homeless. This first housing unit, fully furnished, with heating facilities, was delivered on 30th September 2016 and consists of two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A second housing unit was delivered on 22nd October 2016.
With continuing aftershocks at the end of October 2016, access to the affected areas are restricted and the SSIO of Italy is evaluating the situation, including opportunities to help families and young children.
We pray to Sathya Sai Baba for granting peace and relief to those who are suffering from the natural disasters in Italy.

Please feel free to forward this bulletin to family, friends and others, and visit the SSIO Humanitarian Relief Website for further information.

Jai Sai Ram.
With loving regards,

Bhajan Hall Under Construction in Arghakachi
UP-DATE ON DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS IN NEPAL

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This is an update on the on-going humanitarian relief efforts by the Sathya Sai International Organisation following the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal in April 2015.

Immediately after the quakes, 500 Sathya Sai volunteers served 6,000 hot meals and provided temporary shelter in tents to victims in 10 affected districts. Food, essential goods, and other supplies were continuously supplied to remote villages. Medical supplies and specialised advice were also provided by the SSIO.
During the cold winter of January 2016, Sathya Sai Youth delivered mattresses, blankets and clothes to 588 households in Gumdi village and 827 families in the Sindhupalchowk district, located about 148 km and 140 km from Kathmandu, respectively.
Rebuilding Homes

The SSIO of Nepal has taken up the construction of a total of 71 homes in the villages of Lele, Khalte and Satrasaye to provide shelter to our displaced brothers and sisters. In each village, a community bhajan hall is being built.

Water Projects

Four projects were initiated to restore water supplies to remote villages. After months of arduous work, water supply was secured for 100 families in Barah in July 2016 and for 70 families in Makawanpur in September 2016.

In December 2015, a project was initiated to supply much-needed water to 192 families and a school with 700 students in Baluwa, with the help of two deep tubewells and a reserve tank. In Arghakhachi, another project was started in January 2016 to provide water to 512 families and four schools that have a total of 2,200 students. At both locations, bhajan halls are also being built for the villagers.

THE SSIO – UNITING ALL FAITHS
THROUGH LOVE & SERVICE

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sathya Sai Baba says that God is known by different names and that there is only one religion – the religion of love. Unity of faiths is one of the tenets of the SSIO. In countries around the world, the SSIO participates in many Interfaith events, some of which are featured below.

On 16th August 2015, Sathya Sai volunteers in the Victoria region of Australia, in collaboration with the Whitehorse Interfaith Network, organised an All-Faiths Music Festival at Box Hill Town Hall. More than 350 guests and dignitaries graced this landmark event. Sathya Sai volunteers and members of Hindu and Christian faiths joined in performances by Buddhists, Sikhs, Muslims, and whirling dervishes from the Sufi tradition.
During 1st to 4th October 2015, the Brazilian Sathya Sai Foundation participated in an interfaith meeting promoted by the municipality of Petropolis (City of Peter) – a hilly town near Rio de Janeiro and summer residence of the last Emperor of Brazil, Peter II. The meeting, held at the historic Crystal Palace, highlighted Indian culture and spirituality, and attracted about 9,500 people.
On 21st May 2016, the First National Conference hosted by the SSIO of Canada commenced in Toronto with an interfaith meeting. Representatives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, Chinmaya Mission, Canadian Council of Imams, Buddhist Group, and Zoroastrian Society talked about transforming communities through love and service.
On 23rd May 2016, the Friendship Group for Inter-religious Service (FGIS) in Malaysia came together to meet the newly appointed Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur. The SSIO of Malaysia is a member of the FGIS and it presented projects to promote family values and address social ills in Malaysia.

BULLETIN – Love For Animals (No. 2)

Dear Friends,
In this second bulletin on Love for Animals, we share heart-warming reports from Sai communities around the world on teaching the children about animals and public advocacy to protect animals.

Teaching our SSE children
In Sathya Sai Centres in Azerbaijan, Barbados, Hong Kong, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, Serbia and Spain, Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) classes for children ages of 5–17 were dedicated to animal welfare and practicing kindness to animals.

In Barbados, children were taught the underlying principle of unity in all creation.

In Hong Kong, children wrote poems expressing their love for animals.

In Taiwan, parrots were brought to the SSE class so that children could learn about them first-hand. On another occasion, speakers from the Government's Environmental Protection Agency were invited to speak on the prevention of cruelty to animals and on three endangered species.

In the USA, SSE children, parents and teachers led by Young Adults joined activities to feed the animals.
USA - Animal feeding service was organised in a shelter for cows, goats and a donkey.
Young Adults Advocate for Animals
In Canada, more than 100 Young Adults campaigned on social media under the hashtags #LoveAllAnimals and #ServeThePlanet to spread the message of love for all animals. They shared pictures and messages of love and awareness of animal rights with thousands across their extended social media networks.

In Macedonia, a Facebook page was created to spread love for animals. People were invited to post pictures of themselves with their pets or other animals and to share an inspiring lesson learnt from the animals.
CANADA - Campaign on social media. MACEDONIA - Spreading love for animals through Facebook.
In Germany, Young Adults sent out 500 postcards with photographs of animals with inspiring messages.

Special cards with inspiring quotations on love for animals were distributed on Baba’s Birthday in the Ukraine.
In Mauritius, the Young Adults of the SSIO organised a half-day exhibition and invited other NGOs to participate. 200 people viewed the exhibition. Participants were given the opportunity to adopt homeless puppies. The exhibition was graced by a display of animal bravery by the dogs of the Police Dogs Unit of Mauritius.
MAURITIUS - An exhibition was organised on Love for Animals with the participation of various NGOs.
In Nepal, Young Adults from the SSIO participated in 7 service activities and 2 “Walk for Values” events to demonstrate their love and support for animals. 195 SSIO members and 34 members of the public joined the two walks. Pamphlets and play cards were used to create awareness during the walks.

SECOND INTERNATIONAL SSEHV CONGRESS
IN MEXICO

Dear Friends,

The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) Congress was hosted by the Institute of Sathya Sai Education (ISSE) of Mexico on 15th and 16th October 2016 at the University of San Luis Potosi.

It was a fitting venue to create greater national and Latin American awareness of human values for nation building. The motto of the university, in English, is: “For my fatherland’s sake, I shall teach one to be always independent.”

About 600 teachers and school administrators from Mexico and Central and South America attended the conference, which was well organised by 70 volunteers of the SSIO.
The Congress was inaugurated by an honour guard of the Army presenting the national colours. An official from the Ministry of Education, Government of Mexico, delivered the welcome address. After the proceedings were opened by the ISSE director, three keynote speakers from the SSIO’s Education Committee presented papers on SSEHV. Several breakout sessions were then held on how SSEHV can be more widely implemented in schools and communities.
The government official assigned to oversee the conference later reported that he was so inspired by the message of human values that he resolved then and there to quit an unhealthy personal habit.

On the morning of the second day of the Congress, a security guard hired by the university approached Sathya Sai volunteers and asked where he could obtain more information about a “man with big hair”, whom he had seen walking around the large entrance hall. When he was shown a photograph of Sathya Sai Baba in the Congress brochure, he quickly declared, “Yes, this is the man I saw.”

A LEAP FORWARD AT THE
SATHYA SAI SCHOOL OF KISAJU

Dear Friends,

In this special bulletin, we share the story of hope and transformation that the Sathya Sai School of Kisaju is bringing to the local community in Kenya.

The school was founded in 2001 and provides a holistic primary school education to about 130 needy students in Grades 1 – 8. The education is free and includes boarding and lodging. Over the years, the school has earned a stellar reputation in the community for character development in its students.
In November 2014, the School Board initiated the H.O.P.E. (Honouring Our Parents Everyday) Programme to strengthen the students’ love and respect for their parents. The transformation was quickly evidenced in May 2015 when the Commander of the Ruaraka police station sought the school’s assistance to combat social ills in the community at large.
The next month, the H.O.P.E. Programme was started at another primary school, where the headmistress also requested SSEHV teacher-training for all teachers. To-date, teachers from over 14 schools have been trained in the SSEHV programme.
The Kisaju Sathya Sai school is preparing to take its next leap forward with the construction of a secondary school in Kisaju. By December 2016, construction of the buildings was well underway and the new school building is expected to be ready for students this year.
In addition to classrooms, an assembly hall, and an administration block, the new school will have dormitories for over 200 students and quarters for the principal and teaching staff.
The school is an inspiring story of the transformative power of the values-based education taught by Sathya Sai Baba and the selfless services rendered by volunteers of the Sathya Sai International Organisation of Kenya.

THE SATHYA SAI SCHOOL OF MAURITIUS
MOTTO: “BE GOOD, SEE GOOD, DO GOOD”
In this bulletin, we present a story of human excellence in education. The Sathya Sai School of Mauritius seeks to transform families, society and the country, through education based on the pursuit of unity, morality and peaceful co-existence. The motto of the school is a poignant statement of this aspiration.
Morning Assembly
The Sathya Sai Central Trust of Mauritius and the SSIO of Mauritius both provide full support and guidance to the school to enable it to continuously strive for higher standards.

Established in 2000 as a kindergarten in Vacoas, the school adopted the Sathya Sai Education in Human Values programme and incorporated the integrated approach of Sathya Sai Education into mainstream education in Mauritius. With the blessings of Sathya Sai Baba, on 1st October 2009, the primary section was inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Mauritius. The curriculum follows the Ministry of Education guidelines and offers a supportive learning environment for over 100 children from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
SSEHV Tour - Nature our best teacher
SSEHV Christmas Special
Due to the hard work of the staff, the Sathya Sai school has developed a reputation for excellence and character development. The school encourages in students the qualities of kindness and tolerance, fosters appreciation for the unity of all faiths and cultures, and inspires them to be positive, take responsibility and practise selfless service in society.
Dynamic Parenting Workshop
In the 2016 National Certificate in Primary Education Examinations, Grade 6, the School achieved a 100% pass rate and some students were placed in top secondary schools in the country. This achievement is a testimony to the dedication of all stakeholders, particularly the parents of the children.
