Sathya Sai Aradhana Mahotsavam
in Durban, South Africa
Dear Friends,

24th April 2017 was commemorated by the SSIO around the world in grateful memory of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The SSIO of South Africa paid a moving tribute to the life and teachings of Baba on 30th April 2017, at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban at an event that drew about 10,000 people.

Members of the SSIO gathered at 6:30 am for the morning ceremonies which commenced with the hoisting of the country’s flag. A torch symbolising the Lamp of Love was lighted to lead a parade with the theme, “Love All, Serve All”, which was followed by a procession lead by a magnificent golden chariot that represented the omnipresence of Divinity.
Sathya Sai children organised a Values March in which the teachings of the major religions where displayed, emphasising the five universal human values, and hundreds of orange and white balloons were released into the blue sky.

Thereafter, national and Zonal leaders welcomed the audience, including the representative of the Premier of KwaZulu Natal, who extolled the teachings of love and selfless service of Sathya Sai Baba.
Enthralling dramas and multi-cultural dances by SSE children and Sathya Sai Young Adults entertained the audience. They were accompanied by Sufi and Christian groups that offered musical renditions from their respective faith traditions.
Dr. Narendranath Reddy, Mr. Leonardo Gutter and Dr. William Harvey of the Prasanthi Council, who attended this momentous event, shared the universal message and divine love of Sathya Sai Baba and the humanitarian service projects undertaken by the SSIO.

Respectfully,

Offering of Love to Sathya Sai
Dear Friends,

The Sathya Sai International Organisation (SSIO) has declared 24th April of each year as World Human Values Day. In the first of three Bulletins, we highlight some of the activities organised by Sathya Sai Centres around the world to commemorate this day.
Walk For Values
In Sri Lanka, a 3–km Walk for Values was held on 23rd April 2017 in the capital city, Colombo. About 800 participants joined in, including members of the SSIO and their family and friends, local school children, members of various religious and charitable organisations, and government officials.
Twenty religious and spiritual leaders pledged their support to the SSIO’s efforts to embrace all and unite society through the practice of human values.
In Mexico, on this same day, 40 members of the Sathya Sai Centre of Monterrey held a Walk for Values in Central Alameda Park. They sang songs of love, peace, and brotherhood, and distributed sweets and bookmarks with the teachings of Sathya Sai Baba to the public.
Service
In Mexico, the SSIO served patients at a general hospital, as a follow-up to a medical camp held two days earlier in El Paso del Norte.
In Moldova, Sathya Sai volunteers served veterans of the Great Patriotic War as well as 40 people in a homeless shelter.
Teaching Human Values
In Mexico, a director of the Sathya Sai Institute of Education in Human Values of Mexico spoke at a public forum about the human values taught by Sathya Sai Baba.
In Croatia, a public lecture titled “All that Feeds Us” was given by a human values educator of the SSIO of Croatia in the city of Rijeka. In Bjelovar, volunteers organised a puppet show to teach human values to over 100 children and 11 teachers from a local kindergarten. The students and teachers held a Walk for Values by walking 2.5 km from the kindergarten to the programme venue.
In Moldova and Kazakhstan human values classes were held for orphans.

European Premiere of Sai Symphony Orchestra
Dear Friends,

On 28th May 2017, the European premiere of the Sai Symphony orchestra was hosted at the Historical Town Hall in Wuppertal, Germany. The event was a musical tribute to the life and teachings of Sathya Sai Baba.

Composed by Mr. Mike Herting from Cologne and conducted by Dr. Michael Koehler from Leipzig, this two-hour symphony blended classical Western and Indian Carnatic music.
Over 200 musicians were accompanied by soloists from India, Germany, Senegal, Mauritania and other countries. These exceptionally talented musicians entertained 1,400 people with a grand performance which was greeted with 15 minutes of standing ovation.
One hour before the concert began, an introduction was given by the composer, Mr. Mike Herting and Mr. S.S. Naganand, a trustee of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. The SSIO of Germany presented an exhibition on the work of Sathya Sai Baba, along with the video “His Work” and distributed brochures and flyers on Baba’s divine mission.

EDUCATION FOR THE CHILDREN OF HAITI
Dear Friends,

Since the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, the Sathya Sai International Organisation has provided humanitarian relief with efficiency, love, and compassion, including food, water, temporary shelter, education and medical care for 60,000 patients.
The SSIO also provided free meals daily for destitute children for five years and free education to 240 children in two schools adopted by the SSIO. In addition, learning materials and teacher-training were provided in 2010-2011 to integrate Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSEHV) into the curriculum.
In all, the SSIO served over 2,000,000 meals and distributed over US$1.5 million worth of free medicines and medical supplies in Haiti. The Ministry of Social Services has recognised the SSIO with the Award of Excellence as one of the five best service organisations providing humanitarian relief in Haiti.
In 2016, two SSEHV facilitators from the European Sathya Sai Education Institute (ESSE) trained 30 Haitian teachers and volunteers for the benefit of about 200 children. The SSEHV training conforms with the culture and religion of the Haitian people and helps to create deeper awareness for nation building.
In November 2016, the Honour Our Parents Everyday (HOPE) project was started by the ESSE to benefit more educators.

HUMANITARIAN RELIEF IN KILFI, KENYA
Dear Friends,

After three years of drought due to lack of rainfall, large sections of Kenya are scorched, devastating crops and livestock. Food and water are in short supply, affecting millions of people.
The Kenyan Government recently accepted an offer for assistance from the Sathya Sai International Organisation (SSIO) of Kenya, and identified Kilifi (a coastal town located 650 km from Nairobi) as one of the worst affected areas.
On 8th and 9th April 2017, 30 members of the Sathya Sai Centres of Nairobi and Mombasa, led by a Young Adult, delivered maize, flour, dry beans, cooking oil, salt, and bread, along with clothes, to about 30,000 people in 7 villages in Kilifi.

The Sathya Sai Trust of UK assisted the SSIO of Kenya in this drought relief effort.

The Minister of Mining joined the Sathya Sai volunteers in a ceremony to send off 7 trucks carrying supplies for the drought-stricken residents of Kilifi. The event received wide-spread coverage in the national media.
Recognising these efforts, the Government of Kenya has requested assistance from the SSIO to assess the long-term sustainability of its relief programme to meet the adverse impacts of climate change and unpredictable weather patterns.

HEAL THE ENVIRONMENT – LOVE THE PLANET (H.E.L.P.)
A Sai Spiritual Education Initiative
Dear Friends,

The Sai Spiritual Education programme (SSE) is collaborating with the Young Adults’ Protect the Planet initiative. Children from around the world are invited to participate by practising ‘Ceiling on Desires’ and by submitting original work to inspire others to participate.
The ‘green’ banner highlights the need for H.E.L.P. if our trees, mountains, rivers, etc. are to become pristine again.
By reducing food wastage, conserving water, and reducing plastic waste at home, in school, within Sathya Sai Centres and in the wider communities, children aged 17 and below can show their love for Mother Earth.
Children may create a poster, write a unique poem or essay, capture a video or photograph that demonstrates how we can all help protect Mother Earth. Selected entries will be part of an International Exhibition during the Go Green Conference in Prasanthi Nilayam in July 2018. To submit entries, please email servetheplanet.ssio@gmail.com.

Sathya Sai International Medical Conference - Day 1
The Sathya Sai International Medical Conference on Sathya Sai Ideal Healthcare and Sathya Sai Global Health Mission commenced with an invocation. About 400 delegates from 22 countries, including 150 young healthcare professionals, are attending this two-day event in Anaheim, California, USA.

Dr. V. Sadanand welcomed the gathering and Dr. Narendranath Reddy, Chairman, Prasanthi Council, the first speaker of the morning, pointed out that while most conferences focus on medical advances, improving work flow, billing reimbursements, this conference is dedicated to understanding the fundamental principles of Sathya Sai Ideal healthcare, which are Comprehensive, Free, Universal, Compassionate and Preventive Healthcare. He elaborated on the life, message and legacy of Sathya Sai Baba, the founder of SSIO and several world-class educational and healthcare institutions. Dr. Reddy quoted verse 6:9, Galatians, “Let us not lose our heart in doing good, for in due course of time we will reap, if we do not grow weary,” and exhorted the audience to persevere and continue to do good work together. This was followed by a short video presentation on Sathya Sai Global Health Mission.
Dr. Christina Puchalski from The George Washington University School Of Medicine, in her deeply moving and inspiring talk, focused on the critical need in creating more compassionate and whole person care, which transcends control of disease.  She emphasized the integration of spirituality in medical practice.

The next speaker was Dr. V. Mohan, a leading diabetes specialist from India and trustee of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. He shared his experience in preventing diabetes and gave examples of how health education and simple behavior modifications have a profound impact on health and well-being.

Depression and mental illness is the second most common disorder in the world. Dr. Jyosthna Bhat, a clinical psychologist emphasized the importance of recognizing early signs of mental illness and addressing it.
Dr. William Martin, Dean of College of Public Health, Ohio State University shared that chronic, non-communicable disease constitute 70% of the global burden of disease. One of the major contributing factor is indoor air pollution, especially in the developing world. A simple and effective solution is use of safe cooking devices.
Dr. Neelam Desai, Chief of Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS), SSSIHMS, Puttaparthi, in an informative and inspiring talk, discussed how the Sathya Sai Ideal Healthcare model is pioneering access to comprehensive, universal, compassionate, free and preventive healthcare in practice. She talked about how Sathya Sai Baba guided her in every step in developing the CTVS department.

The morning session concluded with three presentations, sharing personal experiences from SSIO medical clinics/medical camps, humanitarian relief services following natural disasters and volunteering work in Sathya Sai medical institutions.
In the afternoon, Dr. Soumya Panchanathan, Associate Program Director, Phoenix Children’s Hospital Pediatrics Residency Program, talked about being instruments of Peace and agents for change. She emphasized that in clinical practice, one not only does one serve the patients, but also their colleagues and support staff, and this is achieved through the practice of mindfulness.
This was followed by four concurrent workshops: 1. Spirituality in Medicine, 2. Compassionate Care and Personal Improvement, 3. Informatics and telehealth, and 4. Preventive healthcare. The Young Healthcare Professionals also conducted 3 workshops concurrently,  addressing their needs and challenges.

The afternoon program concluded with a Question & Answer session. The presentations and proceedings from the conference will be posted on www.sathyasai.org in the future.

Sathya Sai International Medical Conference - Day 2
The second day of the Sathya Sai International Medical Conference began with a beautiful interfaith music offering by Sathya Sai Young Adults. The morning session had a distinguished line up of speakers, starting with Dr. Mayur Narayan, Associate Professor of Surgery from Cornell Medical Center, who spoke about his experience in trauma surgery.
Delegates at the conference
Dr. Anil Nanda, Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, Louisiana State University, provided several examples of dedicated healthcare professionals from the history of medicine, including William Osler, Hippocrates, and Florence Nightingale. He gave examples of uncertainties in medical practice which teach humility, “Je le pansai, dieu le guerit (I did the dressing, God did the healing).”
About 400 delegates from 22 countries attended the two-day event
Then, Dr. Meera Narasimhan gave an informative presentation on mental health in the context of Sathya Sai Ideal Healthcare. Dr. Brahma Sharma talked about meditation for healthy living. Dr. Juglans Alvarez, a cardiac surgeon, shared how he practises ideal healthcare, inspired and guided by Sathya Sai Baba. Dr. Kathir Nadanachandran recounted experiences in performing free neurosurgical surgeries in Fiji.
A beautiful exhibition was viewed by the conference delegates, who were inspired and motivated by reports of medical services being rendered worldwide. The colourful, 76-poster display covered multi-faceted healthcare services offered by the Sathya Sai Organisations in India and in all continents around the globe, except Antarctica. Videos were shown about medical camps, clinics and humanitarian relief activities after natural disasters.
Panel discussion with Young Physicians
The last session in the morning was about global medical services. Dr. Kalpalatha Guntupalli, Chair of Pulmonary Critical Care, Baylor College of Medicine, described her experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey which recently hit Houston, Texas. Dr. Rajat Gyaneshwar, from Fiji, elaborated on providing health services in remote rural areas specifically for women and children, including mobile clinic services. Dr. Anupom Ganguli, Co-Chair of the Environmental Committee of the SSIO focused on environmental impacts on human health and SSIO initiatives in this area. Sai Balasubramanian, a young healthcare professional, outlined the need to transform healthcare from a commodity to a loving duty.
Workshop
The afternoon sessions included interactive workshops on medical clinics, mental healthcare, medical camps and humanitarian relief, and management of physician burnout. Young adults held a workshop on balancing professional and personal responsibilities.
The conference concluded with a panel discussion, concluding remarks by Dr. Narendranath Reddy, and a beautiful musical presentation by young adults.

All conference material will soon be available on sathyasai.org.

HUMANITARIAN RELIEF EFFORTS
IN THE USA AND CARIBBEAN
Dear Friends,

During August–September 2017, within a span of two weeks, the southern United States, several countries in Central America and the adjacent Caribbean islands were ravaged by three hurricanes of the highest strength. This caused massive destruction, affecting millions, causing hundreds of deaths and about $200 billion in property damage.

Hurricane Harvey caused catastrophic flooding in the states of Texas and Louisiana. Hurricane Irma, another Category 5 hurricane, soon followed, decimating the islands of Barbuda, Saint Barthélemy, St. Martin, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands. Finally, Hurricane Maria, Category 5 as well, left the islands of Dominica and Puerto Rico in absolute devastation, while impacting other Caribbean counties.

The SSIO promptly initiated humanitarian relief services by mobilising volunteers and procuring supplies, equipment and other support.
In Houston, Sathya Sai doctors worked tirelessly at hospitals to serve the victims of the disaster. The SSIO identified three needy communities in Texas hard-hit by the disaster for support on a long-term basis. Every weekend, dozens of SSIO volunteers travel to the affected areas to help with clean up and restoration services. SSIO members of the USA have donated large quantities of supplies for distribution in the Houston area.
In St. Thomas, despite their own losses and widespread property destruction, after the hurricanes passed, members of the Sathya Sai Centre of St. Thomas almost immediately began serving hot meals to members of their local community. SSIO members also organised prayers since Sathya Sai Baba had said that sincere prayer is one of the most effective ways to assuage the grief and suffering of victims of natural disasters. The SSIO of USA is presently shipping large quantities of much-needed supplies to the Caribbean countries.
The situation in Puerto Rico remains grave. The SSIO Disaster Relief Committee is assessing matters on the ground as many areas remain inaccessible and without basic infrastructure. We will keep the readers informed about future opportunities to help our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico.

The SSIO is evaluating options for sustained humanitarian relief operations in these geographic areas. For more information and status updates, please visit http://sathyasaihumanitarianrelief.org/updates/
