Serving victims of disasters in Kenya and Indonesia

Dear Friends,
Kenya
Between March and May 2018, heavy rains caused the banks of the rivers Galana and Sabaki to collapse, triggering widespread floods in Kilifi County, eastern Kenya. Thousands of people were rendered homeless and destitute.
|
|
On 27th May 2018, about 200 SSIO volunteers, including SSIO members from Mombasa, drove for about 17 hours across treacherous roads to distribute 1,300 ‘family packs’ of food and necessities in six temporary camps for the displaced. The SSIO supported the local relief efforts.

Indonesia
On 29th July 2018, a series of earthquakes, including one measuring 6.9, devastated the Indonesian island of Lombok, triggering landslides and destruction, and causing panic. It is estimated that 548 people have died and about 430,000 people lost their homes, as of August 2018.
After the first quake, the SSIO of Indonesia’s Bali SSIO Rescue Team quickly mobilised to distribute food, water, tents and blankets, clothes, medicines, and necessities, together with trauma counselling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, in East, North and West Lombok.

The village of Jeliman Ireng, in North Lombok, was adopted for long-term assistance – a public kitchen was established, and public amenities were reconstructed, including six public toilets and water reservoirs.
